October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month

October marks the beginning of a beautiful month. Most trees have already changed colors, pumpkin has been infused into just about everything, Halloween is essentially a month long celebration of all things spooky, and there are tons of Fall activities to get involved in. That’s not all, though. October, for many other people, is a very special month because it marks the start of  Down Syndrome Awareness Month. This month gives us a chance to spread awareness of the abilities and contributions of those with Down Syndrome. Throughout the month, people celebrate by participating in Buddy Walks, which are awesome events in several different communities where people walk to raise awareness for the condition. SkyPark is hosting its own Down Syndrome Awareness Day on October 28th! We have plenty of surprises up our sleeve, so keep reading to see how you can get in on the fun!

What is Down Syndrome?

So what exactly is Down Syndrome? Down Syndrome is a common chromosomal condition in which an individual is born with an extra copy of Chromosome 21. This means that those with Down Syndrome face some difficulty with brain function. They sometimes have trouble with learning, memory and speech throughout life. It also means that adults with Down Syndrome can experience more cognitive delays later in their lives.  This doesn’t mean that they are all that different from us. So many individuals with Down Syndrome have been living their lives to the fullest. Take Madeline Stuart, for example. Madeline is a model and actress diagnosed with Down Syndrome. She walked her first catwalk during New York Fashion Week in 2015, making history! There are people like Madeline who don’t let their condition keep them from improving the world. We want to encourage them to keep doing so.
